According to Norse mythology, the creature Mímir was the wisest of all beings and the guardian of the well of knowledge. At the conclusion of the Æsir–Vanir War, in a hostage-exchange gone wrong, Mímir was beheaded by the Vanir. But Odin, king of the gods, was able to magically keep Mímir’s head alive. Thus Mímir became Odin’s counsellor.
